Cats + Medications & Supplements

  • Fits (seizures) or "funny turns" (so-called absences) can be due to many causes. As with any veterinary problem a thorough history and physical examination is the first step.

  • The most common flea found on cats and dogs is the cat flea. Many cats live with fleas but show minimal signs. Eradicating fleas can be a demanding task, with the cat and home both requiring treatment. Using a flea preventive can be easier than treating the problem once it has developed. It is important to use products made specifically for cats, as products intended for dogs or other animals can be very dangerous for cats.

  • Flubendazole is used to control roundworms and some types of tapeworms. Your veterinarian will advise a deworming programme for your pet.

  • Fludrocortisone is a synthetic adrenocortical steroid with mineralocorticoid activity.

  • Flunixin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve pain and inflammation. Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe flunixin to reduce pain in arthritis or following surgical operations.

  • Furosemide (also called Frusemide) is used to help reduce the amount of water in the pet's body by increasing the flow of urine.

  • Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat fungal infection (ringworm) of the skin, hair and nails.

  • Heart disease can be divided into two groups, congenital and adult onset forms. In congenital disease the defect is present at birth. The cause of most types of adult onset heart disease is unknown. Heart disease is relatively common in cats, and treatments will depend on the cause of the problem.

  • Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of allergy. Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe this medication to prevent itching in dogs and cats.

  • Hypromellose is a tear substitute used to moisten and lubricate eyes. It is used when your pet has keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome).
